CITY LIFE
Making an abrupt change from a daddy's girl to suit in a university as a first year is not a joke.
Imagine all the culture shock, busy town and streets, crazy city dwellers and amazingly tall and beautiful buildings.
Someone like myself would stand somewhere and watch this city stream to life in the morning and watch it die down at dusk.
Monday oozes in with much traffic snarl ups,too much noise as a result of variant car and bus hootings, loud music from several business centres and the crazy shouting hawkers selling their products.
Today is the first day in this campus.I have no idea where to start or end. However,I was ready to learn and pick up really fast.
My dad was sick, really sick and each time I would think of him being taken to Nairobi hospital,a cold shiver would run down my spine sending my nerves in a tremor.Though I had to do this.To stay strong for him.
Clutching a few requirements for registration and admission,I carefully cross the busy street, through to Moi avenue down to the city campus.
Outside it is well embodied.Boldly and colourfuly written,MT.KENYA UNIVERSITY.
I was excited because I had made it to the university.Who wouldn't anyway?
I pass through a security check and the lady here does not even notice I am new. A poor first year who does not even know where to go from there.
I don't bother to ask either so I make my way into the building carefully reducing my steps to get a glimpse of the activities around here.
I notice a reception desk though it is crowded.
"I can't go to ask her when everyone is watching...!"
I say to myself and head to the other end.
I notice staircases and a group of students standing as if waiting for someone and just then I hear some beeping sound and something like a door opens just by itself.
Wow,I marvel.
Did that just happen?
Quickly, the students get in and it closes by itself again!
"So this city has magic too?" I say it loudly not taking notice of a young guy standing next to me.
"It's called a lift.It operates with the availability of power;electricity that is."
He comes out as a teacher now. Who asked him anyway?
I wasn't going to thank him or something. He will think I am a typical bush lady....
I sneer and shift my gaze to other students coming from the same "lift"
I couldn't wait for them all to come out .I quickly took my place in it and waited for it to take me where everyone else was.
Most amazingly,I hear a lady speaking in it. But I couldn't see her.
She must be beautiful to have such a beautiful voice.
Each time she would say door closed and door open, some would go out and others come in.
Now this was so confusing.People coming in and out and no one seems to tell me my last point!
I was tempted to ask the lady who kept opening and closing the door but I was too scared.
What if it was a ghost?
